Choosing the right type of quiz

Understand our different types of quizzes, designed to support and challenge your students at each step on their learning journey

Updated over 2 weeks ago

We have 4 different quiz types available, ready to support your students at different stages of learning, whether it’s checking prior knowledge, identifying misconceptions, reinforcing learning, or offering stretch tasks.

⚡ Prerequisite quizzes

Best for: Preparing students for an upcoming topic.

What are they?
Prerequisite quizzes are a short set of three diagnostic questions designed to check whether students have the foundational knowledge they need for a topic you're about to teach. These are automatically assigned the week before an upcoming assignment and are tailored to each student based on Eedi’s predictions.

Why use them?
They help you identify gaps in prior knowledge, ensure students are ready for what's next, and support responsive teaching. They show you exactly what your students know ahead of their upcoming topics.

How to use them:

  • Browse topics via your "Plan" page & look out for the "Prepare" section when viewing a specific topic.

  • Choose to assign or present to your class - we recommend doing this the week before you plan to assign your topic.

  • Use the results to adapt your teaching and address any gaps early on.

📖 Topic quizzes (assignments)

Best for: Diagnosing misconceptions and supporting targeted practice.

What are they?
Topic quizzes (or "Assignments" when assigned to a class) are sets of five multiple-choice diagnostic questions focusing on a specific topic area. These quizzes can be selected and set by you, giving you full control. They’re aligned with various curricula, including the UK national curriculum, and are designed to pinpoint misconceptions. When students answer incorrectly, Eedi provides tailored lessons and targeted practice to help resolve misconceptions.

Why use them?
They help you quickly identify where students are struggling. Eedi resolves around 95% of misconceptions through its built-in support, so you can focus your time where it’s most needed.

How to use them:

  • Go to your "Plan" page & click the "Set work" button.

  • Choose a quiz to preview it. You can click on specific questions to preview the intervention materials available.

  • Assign to the whole class or specific students who need extra help.

🔄 Retrieval quizzes

Best for: Reinforcing prior learning and improving long-term retention.

What are they?
Retrieval quizzes are regular, personalised quizzes made up of seven practice questions. They’re generated once a class has completed three or more quizzes and are tailored to each student using Eedi’s algorithm, which selects the best time for them to revisit past topics to boost long-term retention.

Why use them?
They strengthen memory by encouraging students to recall what they’ve learned, a proven method for boosting retention.

How to use them:

  • Retrieval practice becomes available once a class has done at least three quizzes.

  • Choose to automatically assign them weekly, fortnightly, or monthly via your "Settings" page > "Assignment Settings" section.

  • Students receive their personalised, 7-question retrieval quiz.

  • Track student progress via your "Check" page.

🏋️ Stretch & Challenge quizzes

Best for: Providing extra challenge for high-attaining students.

What are they?
These are additional activities that become available to students once they complete a quiz. They include more complex questions designed to deepen understanding, perfect for those who've nailed a topic.

Why use them?
They’re a great way to differentiate by offering advanced learners the chance to explore more challenging problems and build higher-level thinking skills.

How to use them:

  • Students can start a Stretch & Challenge quiz upon completion of any quiz, or when viewing their results.

  • You can track and monitor their results in the Students section of your Teacher Dashboard.
