How to use the Maths keyboard

Find out what students can do on the maths keyboard ⌨️

Students can access a maths keyboard when answering questions on Eedi. It lets them type mathematical notation, instead of using less familiar symbols.

Opening the keyboard

When students are answering practice questions or chatting to a tutor with free text, a keyboard icon appears at the end of the answer box. Clicking this opens the maths keyboard.

Entering fractions

To enter a fraction, students click the ÷ symbol on the keyboard. This automatically formats the answer as a fraction.

To write mixed numbers, students type the whole number first, leave a space, then write a fraction.

⚠️ Note: Any time a student types a division sign, the keyboard will automatically format it as a fraction.

Available symbols and notation

The keyboard is split into categories, accessible via a dropdown. Students can browse by section to find what they need.

The keyboard is most commonly used for:

  • Greek letters — for symbols like π, θ, and α

  • Set notation — for topics involving sets and Venn diagrams

  • Translation vectors and geometric vectors — for geometry and transformation questions

  • Sequence notation — for questions about number patterns

  • Units — including degrees (°) and other common units

  • Squaring and square roots — x², x³, and √

That's a quick overview of what the maths keyboard can do 🙂
